The Best Hour for Your Workout

 

43e39040Are your mornings filled with the chaos of getting a family ready and out the door for work/school? Do your evenings consist of social outings or time spent with your significant other?  These are important things to consider when it comes to deciding when to schedule your workout.

While sciences has shown us pro’s and con’s for morning and evening workouts, but the best workout is always the one you complete.  The first thing you need to look at is your schedule and current habits. Penciling in an after work yoga class when you find yourself consistently getting stuck at work late is an obvious and sure-fire way to fall off the daily fitness wagon.

 

Morning Pro’s

  • Starting the day off with exercise often leads you to make other positive choices throughout the day.
  • Knowing you getting up early to workout can lead to a earlier and more consistent bedtime routine.
  • Enjoy some me time to meditate on the day ahead.

Morning Con’s

  • The temptation to hit the snooze button one more time
  • The stress of the morning rush

Evening Pro’s

  • Burn off any stress built up over the course of the day
  • Make better evening choices
  • Can help your get to sleep.

Evening Con’s

  • Too tired from a busy work day
  • work or social activities taking over

 

When do I prefer to work out?

I tend to lean towards the mornings. I like being the first one up in the house, and the accomplished feeling I get knowing that I’ve nurtured my body before most people roll out of bed. While I wasn’t always a morning person I learned that if I want to get me workout completed the best time for that is in the wee hours. My evening often consist of getting home from work at 6:30pm cooking dinner, supervising homework, and cramming a bit of housework in. This often leaves me drained mentally with my will power drained, and that = skipped workouts.  While I’m working out in the dark quiet hours of the early morning I am able to start with a full bucket of will power, while burning off any stresses left over from the day before. avocado banana bread 8During my whirlwind of decluttering I came across an old cookbook my mother gave me.  It was one that she and her friends wrote for a fundraiser for the church, it’s filled with family favorite recipes.  One of the recipes that we made time and time again during my childhood was the banana bread.  The recipe created the perfectly moist loaf every time.

Looking at the recipe there were a few things in it that now turned me off, like Miracle Whip uck! So I’ve taken that base recipe and made a few changes to add ‘real’ ingredients and lighten it up a bit with the addition of Greek yoghurt and some avocado. So without further ado…lets make some Avocado Banana Bread.

Place dry ingredients into your mixer or a mixing bowl, mix lightly.

1 1/2 cup Flour, 3/4 cup Sugar, 1 tsp Baking Powder, 1 tsp Salt

Dry IngredientsPlace wet ingredients into food processor or blender.  Blend until smooth.

2 Medium Bananas, 1/2 Avocado, 1/2cup Greek Yoghurt, 1 Egg

Pour wet ingredients into mixer with dry ingredients.

Mix mix mix until combined.

Pour into loaf pan.

Bake at 350F for 60min or until loaf tests done with a skewer.

Avocado Banana Bread

Cook Time: 1 hour

Ingredients (1 Loaf)

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 medium ripe bananas
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1/2 cup Greek yoghurt
  • 1 egg

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F Combine flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl and stir well to blend. Place bananas, avocado, yoghurt and egg into food processor or blender and run until almost smooth, scraping down sides once. Pour into flour mixture and until well combined. Pour batter into loaf pan and bake at 350F for one hour or until loaf tests done.

A Spoon Full of….Kiwi??

So how do, you eat your kiwi? 

Thought I’d quickly pop in here and share my afternoon snack.  I’ve had many comments from co-workers on my ingenious kiwi eating skill when I used to bring them to work.  My trick you ask, a grapefruit spoon!!

Yep it makes it oh so easy to scoop out that yummy kiwi leaving nothing but the skin behind. You can also use the serrated edge of the spoon to saw the top off, in preparation.  It’s so easy to just toss your kiwi and spoon in your lunch bag without having to do any prep. I’m all about low maintenance snacks.

Weekly Recap January 4th-10th

This week was pretty uneventful. I am currently sitting in Tim Horton’s sipping a coffee much too late in the day. William is at the bowling alley across the street for a birthday party, so I thought I’d take the time to do a recap. Overall the week went well; it had a few events and A LOT of post holiday recovery hibernation.

Monday
I spent Sunday night at T’s and in an effort to have a productive day I headed home when he went to work. It seemed to have worked because after my morning coffee and some FB time I got right to work decluttering the kitchen. My cupboards seem a little empty now, but it makes me extremely happy (once I completely finish I will do a full ‘tour’ post on it). With all of the organizing going on in the kitchen I hated the thought of messing it back up, so I treated myself to some sushi for dinner, YUM!!

Tuesday
Tuesday was mostly a ‘work’ day and I spent the majority of it at my desk. I did a load of laundry and decided to wash my blinds in the bath tub after having read about it several times on Pinterest; they were filthy as I had never given them a deep clean like this before. Over all it was a success with the exception of the bathroom blinds where the coating on the aluminum has started to flake off!! Oops! I’m not sure why this happened I didn’t use harsh cleaners and the other 4 were fine, looks like it may have been a manufacturing flaw.

Wednesday
I had yet to leave the house since getting home Monday morning. William had been at his Dad’s house for the past 4 days and I was going to be picking him up from school. I had to venture out and restock the fridge and my coffee canister. Burrrr!! I also added a specific goal to my strengthen relationships category, NO DUMPING. I originally learned about this from one of author Gretchen Rubin’s books, I think it was The Happiness Project, but I’ve read them all and can’t quite remember. I’ve noticed for the past little while that I have been unloading every little thing onto T during out end of day check-ins. While he takes it all very well and offers out his no BS advice that I LOVE, this is incredibly unfair to him. So from now on I will be monitoring the no dumping rule, it doesn’t mean I won’t ask his advice, or talk about problems it means that I won’t unload every little thing on him and will try and deal with more of it on my own.

Thursday
I worked for most of the morning on Thursday and did boring chores in the afternoon. At about 3:30 I loaded up my little shopping cart with the 9 books I had to return to the library and headed out. I completely lost track of time and was almost late picking William up from daycare. It must of been quite the sight to see me sprinting through the neighbourhood with my Granny cart in tow. Luckily I made it with 5 minutes to spare! I absolutely hate being late, I usually don’t pick William up on Thursdays so I think that is what through me off.
Friday
I did my first volunteer shift at The Clothing Drive, I spent most of the day sorting and packing bins of clothing. The clothing was all donated and was used to set up a ‘pop-up shop’ at a hotel hosting of 400 Syrian refugees who are in need of winter clothing. They are able to ‘shop’ in the store for free clothing to get them started here. You can find out more about this awesome imitative on their website here.

After a being bent over and lifting boxes for most of the day my back was SCREAMING, but luckily T came to the rescue. In exchange for dinner I got an hour long massage (who do you think won that deal!!!) We spent the rest of the night watching How to Make a Murderer on Netflix, is anyone else hooked, we’ve only watched the first 3 episodes but keep teasing each other about not waiting til were together to watch the rest ( T is going away so it will be at least 2 weeks until we can get together again).

Saturday
Had a great sleep in Saturday morning and we ate breakfast in bed while watching another episode of How to Make a Murderer. After that we decided to quit being lazy and go do something. We ended up wandering around a nearby mall as the weather wasn’t the greatest for walking outside. I got treated to these awesome new socks from Roots; the Roots Cabin socks are my go to boot socks. I also tried on lots of boots, I’m in desperate need of some black leather riding style boots unfortunately I didn’t find anything that fit me well. I have very slim calves and ankles and I always struggle to find boots that don’t look sloppy on me. I’m open to suggestions if you know of any slim fitting boots 

Chasing my Strength in 2016

Who doesn’t love a blank slate, a fresh start and this time of year the changing of the calendar from one year to the next seems to be the ultimate fresh start for most people. So what am I doing with my 2016 fresh start? Finally getting this blog up and running for one, and embarking on a year-long project to chase my strength. I want 2016 to be the year that I bring that inner strength that’s hiding deep down inside me out into the wide open.

To help me with this I sat down and broke this project down into 4 main categories that I want to bring strength to;

Mind

This past little while I have faced a number of bumps in the road which has lead to a touch of anxiety. I want to work on strengthening my mind though mindfulness to help combat this and give me better control over my thoughts.

Body

While I am happy with my body weight, I’m dangerously close to falling into that skinny fat category. I’ve been more sedentary than I would like to admit lately and that needs to change.  I know that when I strengthen and properly nourish my body my energy levels increase and I overall feel better.

Relationships

This year I want to strengthen my friendships, my romantic relationship and my relationship with my son. Far to often I find that the busyness, geographical distance and other semi excuses have been getting in the way of nurturing these relationships the way they deserve to be.

Surroundings

I believe that your surroundings have a powerful effect on your life. Being so busy when I moved into this house I didn’t set things up the way that I wanted, I also didn’t do much decorating or add any homey touches.  Now a year after we moved in I am longing for an organized living space that feels like a home to us and its going to happen this year.

 

Over the next year I will be sharing my insights, projects, successes and failures relating to this project. Publically blogging about my Chasing Strength project is not only meant to be an accountability measure for myself, but also I hope anyone who follows along will find these ideas helpful for them. I know I often learn so much from reading about other people’s experiences.
